Choco is a 28-year-old Appaloosa grade. He is also blind. He came from a typical
horse rescue situation; his young owner grew up and went off to college. At the time, he was only blind in one eye, but because
of this genetic fault a new owner could not be found for him. The Foundation adopted him to avoid slaughter.
With even only limited sight, Choco,
who had been trained in dressage, was for several years one of our best school horses. When his other eye failed at age
25, he was permanently stabled with another horse, Sam, who acts as his eyes. He feels safe as long as she is nearby. Choco
is ridden rarely now, but it is not impossible to do so; some of our more experienced riders will give him some exercise every
once in a while, and he loves the change of pace. He is also possibly the best teacher any rider could ever have because he
requires so much of the rider's attention. He is the third blind horse the Foundation has cared
for over the years.
