Johnnie is a 22-year-old Polish Arab with a tragic past. His previous
owner beat and abused him, and when the Foundation got him, he was vicious, unfriendly, and headshy. Over several
years, advanced students worked with him, slowly rebuilding his trust for humans. Eventually he became a school horse,
and, because of his energy and agility, was used for beginning jumping classes.
While jumping, he sustained a serious injury to one of his hind legs. It was highly unlikely
that he would ever be rideable again, but although some horse owners may euthanize a horse with such an injury we
did not.
The leg healed
slowly, but finally it was declared as sound. Johnnie began to be used in lessons again to rebuild the injured leg's strength.
Miraculously, it never troubled him again--he was even able to resume jumping.
Having passed his prime, he is now rarely used for jumping, though he's still an excellent
riding horse. He has mellowed out quite a bit but is still easily frightened due to his abuse. He has also
proven to be invaluable to the Foundation and its programs.
