Horse Harbor Foundation Is Now 30 Years Old! April marks the 30-year anniversary of Horse Harbor Foundation rescuing, rehabilitating and providing lifelong and professional loving care for at-risk horses, making it one of the oldest continuously operating nonprofit equine rescue sanctuaries in the country. Founded by Allen and Dr. Kenn Feigner, DVM, in 1994 just up the road from our present location at what was then Sound Equine Hospital, the sanctuary moved around to several locations near Poulsbo. Then in 2005 we moved to our permanent home on Big Valley Road thanks to the generosity and commitment of benefactors Mike and Kay Daling, who made it possible. Plans are underway for an anniversary celebration later this month and we hope to see a lot of old friends from over the years join us then.
Spring Break This Year Is April 1 Through 6. This year our quarterly one-week break from lessons coincides with that of the North Kitsap School District, making it easier for member families to plan trips with their youngsters.
Openings Still Available In Our Summer Day Camps. Although early enrollment has ended and as usual our Summer Horse Day camps in July and August are already half filled, there are still opening in all four camps if you want to enroll your junior student in one of these. At the moment there are 4 openings each in the July 9th and 23rd camps, 2 in the August 6 and 6 in the August 20 camp. The camps have been opened to the general public and will fill rapidly, so don’t delay if you want one of these spots. Just email harmonyhorses@yahoo.com and let us know so you don’t have to go through the application process on our website.
The Sanctuary Will Get A New Look Soon. Girl Scout Troop 41387 from Bangor Base has made Horse Harbor their community service project this Spring and will be using their cookie sales money to paint the old hay barn beside the road as you drive in. This will be the same ivory color as the barn, shop, arena and other buildings on the property and give us a much more professional look. Our thanks go out to these girls and their leaders and we will reciprocate by hold a badging clinic for those interested to earn their Scouting Horseback Riding badges.
The Race Begins To Get Ready For A Busy Summer Now.
As always, the race begins as soon as Spring Break is over to get ready for another busy Summer season on the sanctuary. In addition to the barn painting project above, we will be repairing fences, constructing another walk-in shelter in the arena field, clearing ditches and the bioswale and engaged in a myriad of other repair and maintenance projects. If any parents are handy and would like to help out, just let Aria know and she will have a list of tasks needing done while your youngsters are taking lessons. Weed whacking and clearing fence lines is always near the top of our list.
Thank you,
Maryann, Aria and Allen
